Does life truly change over time, or, as we mature, do we merely view our life through a more refined microscope?

It is with this notion of change that I embarked upon Delta T, an attempt to differentiate physical change from its appearances, to document realty versus our perception.

Utilizing the basic light-sensitive principals of the photographic process, I coated sheets of translucent velum in a light-sensitive emulsion (each series being produced at the same time) which I then digitized into the computer via a high-resolution scanner at designated intervals. The resulting images have been contrast-enhanced in a uniform fashion, allowing the individual differences between each individual “print” to become obvious. To the naked eye, the originals all appear the same - an off-white sheet with little silver particles that reflect in the light – but the final compositions prove to be unique and individual works of art.

The images presented here in this portfolio are remnants of the documentation and study. They represent the naturally-occurring patterns which developed as the uniformly-coated papers were exposed to light, creating abstractions not unlike alien landscapes, in texture and form. I became less interested in the concept of change-versus-time in favor of the uniqueness each frame possessed, that objects which have been produced in a controlled and formulaic environment truly possess so much individuality and character.

In this regard, I chose to present these images as landscapes, evoking a similar response that I believe I would form to landscape images from the moon or a foreign planet.  I embarked upon this project as a way to investigate how my memories alter over time, and in an unlikely result, the finalized product conjures my own memories of middle school science classes learning of the planets and our universe.
